Taiwanese artist Poyen Wang (王博彥) began his residency at Triangle Arts this March, and curators Yenyi Lee (李彥儀) and Hung-yen Chang (常鴻雁) are also currently in residence as part of the International Studio & Curatorial Program (ISCP), supported by Taiwan’s Ministry of Culture and the Taipei Cultural Center in New York.
DUMBO Open Studios 2023
Taiwanese artist Poyen Wang will participate in Triangle’s Spring Open Studios 2023 program this weekend on April 22-23 from 3-6 pm, hosted in conjunction with Art in DUMBO Open Studios 2023.
In April each year, 100+ artists throughout Dumbo open their doors to the public as part of DUMBO Open Studios, giving visitors a look inside studios and workspaces. Poyen Wang will present his recent video work, Endearing Insanity, alongside other related graphics and animations during the Open Studio program.
Endearing Insanity is a 9-minute film using 3D Computer graphics, punctuated by a self-introduction, sensual but eerie bodily gestures, and dramatic sound effects, reflecting the longing for connection and desire for visibility within a displaced environment.
The film takes place in a small apartment kitchen, which is inspired by where the artist once lived in Brooklyn. A seemingly ragged protagonist, constrained in various enclosed spaces such as a cabinet, microwave, and sink, performs a monologue waiting for someone to visit. The spoken words are comprised of text found from online message boards, toeing the line between sincerity and absurdity. A collage of sounds from liquid, wind, and drums suggests an unstable state and enhances the theatrical tension of everyday life.
Employing the genres of horror and erotica, Endearing Insanity navigates the threshold where sensuality and terror meet. The work embraces contradictory ideas, dissolving boundaries and oscillating between the seductive and the repellant, the private and the public, and the self and the other.
ISCP Spring Open Studios 2023
Taiwanese curators Yenyi Lee and Hung-yen Chang will participate in the International Studio & Curatorial Program (ISCP) Spring Open Studios this year. Please join us on April 21 from 6–9 pm and April 22 from 1–7 pm to see their and others’ impressive works.
The ISCP is a presentation of international contemporary art organized by 35 artists and curators from 28 countries currently in residence. Twice per year, ISCP offers the public access to private artists’ and curators’ studios to view artwork and engage with creators.
Yenyi Lee will showcase her research in progress and present her past curatorial exhibitions. Since 2013, Yenyi Lee’s curatorial research has focused on exploring the concept of failure and mistakes. During her residency at ISCP, Yenyi Lee’s research will further focus on automation and autonomy, as well as whether automation will affect humans’ antifragility when facing complex decisions. Two incidents in particular—the first self-driving fatal car crash and fatal Boeing 737Max crash in 2018 —have piqued her curiosity, and she tries to explore how literature and visual communication alter our emotions and perceptions, and whether it is possible to conceptualize dialogues on automation in a way that avoids apocalyptic or overtly optimistic discourses.
Hung-yen Chang’s residency project at ISCP was inspired by her own experience working as a curator at public art museums under different operating systems. She attempts to portray the influence of economic, industrial and political relations on the medium of contemporary art during the Cold War period through a unique perspective via an enriching collection of documents and archives related to the Sino-U.S. relationship.
