Ilha Formosa is a Portuguese historical name for Taiwan, meaning "Beautiful Island". To depict the beautiful image, the concert will include three pieces of Taiwanese composers; among them Shiuan Chang and Hung-Ping Chang will be present at the performance.
Taiwanese composer Shiuan Chang’s compositions have been described as “a tapestry of extraordinary sound and idea; not word of painting or sound landscape, but rather a psychological meditation.” Bāng Chhun-hong is one of the most well-known Taiwanese Hokkien song composed by Taiwanese composer Teng Yu-Hsien in 30s. Its melody is a nostalgic calling for a lot of people who are living outside of the country. Shiuan originally arranged “Bang Chhun-Hong” for string quartet to be performed by Innuan during the “Fancy Animal Carnival” exhibition opening on the Broadway, dedicated to the renowned Taiwanese artist HungYi and the InSian Gallery.
Tyzen Hsiao's rich tonal style has earned him an international reputation as 'Taiwan's Rachmaninov.' His compositions stand as a musical manifestation of the Taiwanese literature movement that revitalized the island's literary and performing arts in the 1970s and 1980s. With the title ‘Formosa’ his piano trio was composed as a free formulation in one movement. With the tone of church music, it has penetrated religiosity, which introduces to blessed purity.
Hung Ping Chang is a composer from Taiwan. In season 2016-17, she was invited by the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York to write “Thank You MTA, Thank You from Taiwan”, a piece dedicated to MTA. Chang integrates the beauty from east and west, elements from modern and classical music, in her creations. With unique style and technique used in her writing, her works speak to the audience with exotic colors and elegance. Through visual and aural effects, Hung Ping embodied tasteful elements from the East and West in “The Silk Road Fantasy” (2016). This string quartet work tells the stories of the travelers of Silk Road in the past centuries and expresses the Eastern cultural aesthetic.
