  • Date:2020-07-10

Enjoy the on-line Family Fun anytime! At home audiences can enjoy the videos of the Taiwanese puppet troupe “Yung Shing Le Shadow Puppets”(永興樂皮影戲團). The Detroit Institute of Art (底特律美術館) is sharing a recording of the Yung Shing Le’s performances featuring two separate stories, “The Sandbag Trilogy”(沙包三部曲) and “The Mountain of Flames,”(西遊記-火燄山) and a special backstage view!

Yung Shing Le, a century-old family shadow puppet troupe from Taiwan, performed in November of 2018 at Detroit Institute of Art (DIA). The Metro Detroit region audiences enjoyed live music, puppetry and stories that have been handed down for generations as well as up-close encounters with puppets unique to Taiwan. Now it’s also available on line, and Taipei Cultural Center in New York is grateful for DIA sharing the recordings while we cannot recreate the in-person experience during the pandemic.

Link to see two separate stories:
♦The Sandbag Trilogy – a comedic series of entanglements with a seemingly mischievous sandbag
♦The Mountain of Flames – an excerpt from the classic 16th Century Chinese novel Journey to the West.
