Taiwanese Waves Returns to SummerStage and Celebrates Women’s Empowerment

  • Date:2019-08-01

Taiwanese Waves, the groundbreaking concert series that showcases the latest wave of Taiwanese music, will return for its 4th time to Capital One City Parks Foundation SummerStage on Saturday, August 3! This year four female-fronted Taiwanese acts are in focus, including both rising stars and long-time favorites. All representing the current wave of popular Taiwanese music.

Supported by Ministry of Culture, Taiwan and presented by Taiwanese Waves, this year, the women are in focus. Taiwanese Waves' curator Mia Min Yen says she consciously wanted to spotlight female-fronted bands and artists this year.

"Asian females are a minority among minorities, so we wanted to use our platform to give them a voice. We selected the four acts this year to represent female artists of different generations in Taiwanese pop music," says Yen.
The four acts were also chosen as they portray a variety of the current Taiwanese popular music trends. Wan Fang is a clear depiction of the karaoke-friendly Mando-Pop ballads while Tizzy Bac’s piano rock represent the "indie band era" of the early 2000's - a direct result of Taiwan lifting the restrictive martial law in the 90s.
9m88 and Aboa are both heavily inspired by American urban music culture. Abao's lyrics, however, are in her tribe's indigenous language while 9m88 makes the genre her own by singing in both English and Mandarin.

Featuring:
• 9m88 aka. Baba is a Taipei-raised but New York-based musician. Her musical genres include Jazz, R&B, Pop, and Free Improvisation. She released the single "Aiming High" on 7/3, her debut album is out August 8.
• Abao successfully turned herself from a Mando-Pop singer into an indigenous R&B singer, winning 2017 Best Indigenous Album and Best Album Producer at the 28th Golden Melody Awards with Vavayan.
• Tizzy Bac is a unique trio playing piano rock. Sadly while recording their seventh album last year, bassist Che Yu, passed away following a long battle with cancer. With thoughts of Che Yu and a deeper understanding of life, they pushed on and churned out Him, their most moving and mature album to date.
• Wan Fang is one of the most recognizable and beloved voices in Taiwanese pop music. She sings the theme song on the movie "Dear Ex," currently streaming on Netflix.
