Scarecrow Contemporary Dance Company (SCDC) was founded in 1989 by Chiu-Mei Ko in Tainan. In 1998, choreographer Wen-Jinn Luo, who received the Master of Fine Arts degree in dance from University of Illinois at Urbana - Champaign in U.S.A., became the artistic director of SCDC. Wen-jinn has led and transformed SCDC to the direction of creating and performing a variety of artistic and contemporary dance style since then. Her goal for SCDC is to invite and work with outstanding as well as promising dancers, choreographers, and artists from all over Taiwan together to develop the contemporary dance style into a more active and vivid art form.

? An Independent Sleep ? , premiered in 2009, was choreographed by Wen-JinnLuo. The creative concept of the dance was provided by Wen-chun Lo. This work was inspired by the 19th century American great poet Emily Dickinson's distinctive poem and solitary soul and mysterious life. Wen-jinn tended to portrait the solitary state of mind within a woman's fragile ?gure yet strong will in this dance. The use of the large white paper symbolized the soft and sharp quality of the woman. In the dance, Wen-jinn also expressed the transforming process of how a woman gave up her social and family life in order to find the true independent and free-will soul and mind leading her to an eternal life.
