"YING INTER - REFLECTION"

Taipei Culture center is pleased to present "ying Inter-Reflection", an oil painting exhibition of U.S.- based Taiwanese husband-and-wife artists, Bethany Ying-Ju Lai and Stone Chi-Ying Hsieh.

The exhibition includes a series of cityscapes and figures. In the glimpse of busy metro life, between the rapid passing lights and shadows, Bethany and Stone manage to capture both extrinsic and intrinsic beauty. New York's Central Park, for example, is a massive, colorful space where visual perspective is rich and abundant. The "inter- reflection" of the city, nature, people and oneself which casts in the Park, projects in Bethany and Stone's eyes and becomes an artistic inspiration. With colors and lines, they transform their everyday living experiences, be it the land between sky and water, trees of the changing seasons, people passing by, performances on the street, or the parent-kid interaction, into their paintings.

"Inter-reflection" is light's inter-projection. Often it refers to a visual interaction instead of physical. Nevertheless, it can also be used to describe the spiritual echo between people's minds. Bethany and Stone have long been devoted to figure painting. An essential element for figure painting that touches people's hearts is the human movement; but more so, the soul and emotions which are hidden in the movement. Bethany and Stone have always vowed to face canvas with humbleness and honesty. "No superficial representation, no hypocritical abstraction" is their attitude in painting. Although they both subject in landscape and portraits, they each have a distinctive painting style. Exhibiting their paintings together presents an interesting "inter-reflection" of each other's interpretation of the same subject.

Bethany and Stone earned their Masters of Fine Arts in Savannah College of Art and Design in Georgia. They moved to New York in 2003, and have since been working on the creation and teaching of art. In this world's capital of art, there is a variety of interests in the art arena. Bethany and Stone choose nothing besides painting. Insist on facing the canvas and the nature humbly, they are experiencing a renewal mind through years of work. Bethany and Stone's paintings have been exhibited in Taiwan and in the U.S.A., and are in both private and public collections.
