GOING GREEN - NEW ENVIRONMENTAL ART FROM TAIWAN

  • Date:2010-09-20

Environmental art is a relatively new concept in Taiwan, and it is only in recent years that contemporary artists have started to take an interest in this area and create works that reflect concerns about the environment. The exhibition?Going Green ? New Environmental Art from Taiwan?brings together artworks in all media by contemporary Taiwanese artists who are concerned about environmental issues.

The exhibition will consist of 2 to 4 works each by 16 Taiwanese artists. Each venue for this exhibition will also include two site-specific works created by two visiting Taiwanese artists who will be artists in residence for up to two weeks to make their works. The visiting artists will interact with the staff and visitors and offer a lecture or workshop as a public program with the exhibition. The curator, Jane Ingram Allen, will also attend the opening at each venue and provide a lecture.

The exhibition, reflecting the unique viewpoint and conceptual approach to nature and the environment of Taiwan's contemporary artists, will offer to the USA audiences an international perspective on environmental art to enhance the programming at the selected host venues. Moreover, this exhibition will present contemporary art from Taiwan focused on environmental issues to a wide American audience. The artworks will raise questions about how this art is different from American or European art about the environment. The exhibition also becomes an opportunity to broaden perspectives and introduce new viewpoints from a culture, geography and climate very different from that of the venues in the USA. Not only does this exhibition raise awareness about global environmental concerns, but also offers opportunities for reflection about art's connections to tradition, culture, nature, history and even politics.
