Can Chinese calligraphy, a medium developed several thousand years ago, play a role in our modern life? Can Chinese calligraphy, a distinctive cultural form, have its niche in our globalized world? This lecture will explore these questions through Grace Yang-Tze Tong?s calligraphic works, with special attention to their tie with Abstract Expressionism, an art movement flourishing in New York.
Professor is Associate Professor of East Asian Art & Archaeology in the Institute for the Study of the Ancient World, New York University. Before joining the NYU faculty, Prof. Tseng was Associate Professor at Yale University and Assistant Professor at University of Southern California. She received her Ph.D. from Harvard University, M.A. and B.A. from National Taiwan University. She is the author of Picturing Heaven in Early China, which was published by Harvard University Press in 2011.
