  • Date:2013-01-29

With collaboration between Flushing Town Hall, the Taipei Cultural Center of TECO in New York and through the coordination of Hsing-Lih Chou, a professor of Columbian University, the exhibition of Fu-Gui-Ji-Xiang-Exhibition of Chinese New Year Prints from Taiwan is about to start from February 10 to March 10 at the gallery of Flushing Town Hall.

New Year Prints are a venerable form of Chinese folk art closely connected with the thoughts, emotions, and lives of ordinary people. It is a jubilant, celebratory, and utterly unique folk tradition.
The Chinese New Year Prints Contest of Taiwan, which has been held 28 times since its founding in 1985, encourages artists to utilize various printing techniques to create New Year Prints that merge traditional culture with contemporary innovation. Many past works draw their images from daily life, but blend them with age-old cultural elements in order to create unique works of art that are simultaneously traditional and modern. In addition to selecting awardees and finalists every year, the New Year Prints Contest commissions experienced artists to draw on their deep cultural and aesthetic knowledge to create striking, energetic new works that reflect the influences of both East and West.

This exhibition showcases winning works from the past four years of the New Year Prints Contest, as well as commissioned works. The 32 prints that comprise the exhibition utilize a wide variety of printing techniques, including silk screen, screen printing, linocut, intaglio, relief printing, woodblock printing, planography, aluminum foil printing, and digital printing. The works are visual interpretations of traditional idioms, lucky sayings, and blessings that play on the names of four New Year animals: Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon and Snake. The exhibition welcomes all audience and wish it bring every audience a prosperous year of Snake.
