The Ministry of Culture of The Republic of China (Taiwan) invites you to attend “Reaching Beyond: New Media Arts in Taiwan” on October 10th-13th at the 808 Gallery at Boston University (808 Commonwealth Avenue) in Boston, Massachusetts. This multiday cultural event features presentations showcasing recent interdisciplinary projects by artists and curators in Taiwan. The Ministry of Culture aims to enhance international artistic exchanges and provide more opportunities for Taiwanese artists to work abroad as artists-in-residence.
The Ministry of Culture will host a reception at the 808 Gallery on Friday, October 12th. The Ministry is also sponsoring a private Gala Dinner for two hundred VIPs featuring an opening performance by interdisciplinary choreographer Yi Huang.
Curated by Aaron Chiu, “Reaching Beyond” will introduce and promote Taiwanese artists at the international level. The event will display twenty works that challenge conventional artistic modes and media, including interactive poetic installations, experimental technological and performances, and new theatrics.
Mary Sherman, founder and director of TransCultural Exchange, has invited fifteen Taiwanese artists to attend the event. Three Taiwanese art experts will present on their work: Margaret Shiu, Director of the Bamboo Curtain Studio, will speak about her more than 19 years of experience working in artist residency programs; Mali Wu, recipient of the 2013 Taishin Arts Award, will discuss the link between art and environmental sustainability; and Wen-Hao Huang, director of the Digital Art Center, will present on recent developments in Taiwanese art and technology.
Four artist-in-residence representatives will also present at the conference: Yu-Fang Shang, director of Bywood Art Space; Chia Yun Lee, program manager of the Dulan Sugar Refinery Artist Village in Taitung; Liya Wang, curatorial manager of the Kuandu Museum of Fine Arts at the National Taipei University of the Arts; and Joanna Sun, project manager of the Taipei Artist Village/Treasure Hill Artist Village. Hsiangling Lai, the exhibit’s co-curator and former director of the Museum of Contemporary Art in Taipei, will also attend the event to help mentor emerging talents.
The Ministry of Culture has selected young emerging artists currently participating in residencies in the United States to represent Taiwan, including Shu-jung Chao, Hai-hsin Huang, Yi Huang, I-chen Kuo, Chi-yu Liao, and Meng-hsuan Wu.
The Ministry would like to invite all artists, art organizations, foundations, museums, and cultural professionals to attend “Reaching Beyond: New Media Arts in Taiwan” as well as the TransCultural Exchange conference also taking place in Boston. It is not only a platform for intercultural exchange, but also a professional opportunity to network with international cultural institutions.
