Taiwan Academy presents “A SUMMER AT GRANDPA’S”on September 26th

  • Date:2013-09-18

It is our pleasure to announce that Taiwan Academy of TECO in New York will launch its Film Thursday program with “Adventures of Summer Vacation: Memory of our Happy Childhood”film series, which includes one animation and 2 feature films focusing on depicting Taiwan society this summer. Family attendance is highly recommended.

The series comes with the film A SUMMER AT GRANDPA’S on September 26th. The 1984 film is one of director Hsiao-Hsien HOU’s "Coming-of-Age” trilogy, it is told from the point of view of 11-year-old Tung-Tung, gripping in its simplicity and contains a hint of melodrama, shows a sublime meditation on growing up and its inevitable loss of innocence.

The eponymous Grandpa is a doctor in a small, rural town. His grandson and granddaughter are taken to spend their summer vacation with him. It’s a great way to know more about early Taiwan society through this movie. The idyllic looking movie tells about realities, about the stories that all of us could have had experienced, everything was so common, realistic, and beautiful.

In Hou’s completely unsentimental depiction of childhood he has given us a work of piercing observation and integrity, so that this film is really worth watching.
