Films of Lee Ping-Bing to present at Metrograph in New York from Sep 6-30

Don't miss upcoming “Daring Motion: The Films of Mark Lee Ping-bing” film festival from September 6-30. Organized by Metrograph and supported by Taipei Cultural Center in New York, the festival will feature 12 films photographed by Lee, known as "a poet of light and shadow.” Lee is will meet the audience in New York for the opening of the festival from September 6-8, 2024. 


Mark Lee Ping-bing is a critically acclaimed Taiwanese cinematographer whose unique perspective in cinematography has been praised and appreciated by many directors. The retrospective celebrates Lee’s partnership with Hou Hsiao-hsien by showcasing “A Time to Live, a Time to Die,” “Flowers of Shanghai,” ” Flight of the Red Balloon,” “Dust in the Wind,” “Millennium Mambo,” and "Three Times.”Moreover, “Espèces Menacées,” “Air Doll,” “Norwegian Wood” and “Strawman,” Lee’s collaborations with director Gilles Bourdos, Hirokazu Kore-eda, Trần Anh Hùng, and Wang Tung will be presented to show his profound impact on the global cinematic landscape.


Over a five-decade career, Mark Lee Ping-bing’s collaborations with filmmakers such as Wong Kar-wai, Trần Anh Hùng, Ann Hui, and most notably, his long, rich collaboration with Hou Hsiao-hsien, have inspired a rising generation of cinematographers. Bradford Young, director and Academy Award-nominated cinematographer, admires the films that Lee and Hou have made together. “Whenever we set up a shot that we want to try and do in one setting, a oner, we always say, “Let’s do a Mark Ping-Bing/Hou Hsiao-hsien,” as Young described in his interview with Lee on the Metrograph magazine. Young will be joining a post-screening session with Lee on September 7. 


Big Buddha+ directed by Huang Hsin-yao was selected for New Taiwanese Voices section of the festival. This slate is curated by Lee to show his new curatorship talent. This Golden Horse Award-winning film made its NY premiere at New Directors/New Films Festival in 2018, and received a positive review by Variety as “arguably the best film to emerge from a year of exciting resurgence in Taiwan.”

【About Mark Lee Ping-bing】

Mark Lee Ping-Bing is one of the most eminent cinematographers and pioneers of moving imagery. Lee entered the Central Motion Picture Co. as a backstage assistant in 1977 and started his career as a cinematographer in 1981 when Lee was asked to work for a film as a photographer director in Hong Kong. 


His remarkable career encompasses over 70 films and an impressive 21 international awards. His work on the 2012 film Renoir earned him the First Annual Spotlight Award for Best Cinematography from the American Society of Cinematographers, and the French Academy of Cinema Arts acknowledged his work with a Cesar Award nomination for Best Cinematography in 2014. In 2016, he won the Silver Bear for Outstanding Artistic Contribution at the Berlinale for his exceptional work on the film Crosscurrent and in 2000 he won the Grand Technical Prize at the Cannes Film Festival for his work on the film In the Mood for Love.
