Director Fan Wu’s XiXi selected for 2024 Hot Docs International Competition

  • Date:2024-04-26

The Taipei Cultural Center in New York is delighted to collaborate with the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival to present “XiXi,” Taiwanese filmmaker Fan Wu’s feature-length debut. Wu will be in attendance for post-screening discussions on April 28, April 30 and May 4.

The Hot Docs Festival is the North America's premier documentary festival. This year, the 31st edition of the festival will showcase 168 documentaries from 64 countries and 83 international premieres from April 25 to May 5 in Toronto, Canada.

Fan’s “XiXi” was selected as one of 10 films for the 2024 Hot Docs International Competition program, which means the film is eligible for the Best International Feature Documentary Award and the Special Jury Prize – International Feature Documentary. The recipient of Hot Docs’ Best International Feature Documentary Award will qualify for consideration in the Documentary Feature Subject category at the next annual Academy Awards without needing the standard theatrical run.

Wu graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from National Taiwan University before she joined the DocNomads Erasmus Mundus program in Documentary Filmmaking.  Her first co-production, LAST DAYS AT SEA, directed by Venice ATIENZA, was premiered at the 71st Berlinale. During the production process, Wu’s debut project, “XiXi,” was a recipient of the Sundance Institute’s Documentary Fund and the Development Prize for Best Female Director at DOK Leipzig 2020.

“XiXi” received praise as a heartfelt essay film exploring womanhood, autonomy and the power of self-reinvention. The documentary revolves around Fan’s friendship with the uninhibited artist XiXi. Having exchanged video diaries of their daily lives, Fan and XiXi explore intergenerational wounds and challenge entrenched beliefs. The film offers a mirror for viewers to reflect on their own struggles and the vulnerability that arises when forging a path of one’s own.

The 2024 Hot Docs International Competition program is renowned for showcasing captivating stories and innovative filmmaking, while offering audiences unique perspectives from around the world. The festival also boasts a dynamic series of knowledge sessions, networking opportunities and market programs for documentary practitioners and industry delegates.
