Kickstarted by two Taiwanese expatriates, artist collective HATCH Series will venture into its second pop-up group exhibition in New York on August 1st, 2015. To celebrate the creative talent of our peers, HATCH aims to create an incubative platform where emerging artists and urban professionals can have an informal space to exhibit their works and strengthen their cross-sector professional network.
A part of the overall purpose of HATCH is to explore the unique conditions that inform the work and process of artists living in urban contexts. With this in mind, the second group exhibition HATCH Series No. 2 is dedicated to explore the fluctuating definition of urbanism and how creative community experience such transformation.
For HATCH Series No. 2: Between the Concrete, 12 featured artists will be presented in a warehouse-converted loft apartment located in Greenpoint, Brooklyn to challenge the boundaries of the conventional white-cube art presentation. Informed by the awareness of a certain temporality and transience - intrinsic to an urban lifestyle – and its impact on urban community and space, we invite artists to critically engage with the idea of urbanism and bring to light possible tensions that can either formally or informally be found in their practice. These ideas range from anxiety, alienation, displacement, violence, gender conflict, to the breach of privacy.
With the second happening, HATCH Series No. 2 incorporates the feedback of our community with the inclusion of interactive work selection and increasingly robust programming. This group exhibition will introduce the first artist panel and exhibition walk-through to create a setting for intimate dialogue amongst the artists and event participants.
The show will present 1) a snapshot of how creative individuals live, consume, and produce the city - and ultimately become an integral process of the urban fabric, 2) how new ideas are inspired by such close exchange within the urban creative cluster, and 3) the social issues intensified by the same proximity in breathing space.
HATCH will continue to operate in both New York and Taipei to further foster inter-cultural and cross-sector conversations. The first HATCH Taipei show is scheduled to take place in early December. Co-Founders and Co-Curators
Taiwanese expatriates Minna Son and Nana Yu-I Lee conceptualized HATCH Series in April 2015 during their time as the interns at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation. Intrigued by the changing post-colonial worldwide momentum, the duo is interested in exploring the artist representations of diasporic memory within the context of global cities. The two has curated the first and second HATCH Series pop-up group exhibitions. Son holds a B.A in Critical and Visual Studies, Pratt Institute. Lee recently graduated from the M.A program of Arts Administration, Columbia University.
