Puppetry is a form of theater that has been around for thousands of years. There are many kinds of puppets, from those that dance on strings to glove puppets. The popularity of glove puppetry in Taiwan has endured. Skilled glove puppeteers can animate lifeless material and perform all sorts of complicated actions, and no puppeteers are more talented than those from Taiwan. The Taiyuan Puppet Theatre was founded to continue this tradition, while at the same time creating new and innovative music plays.
The glove puppetry performances are miniature version of Peking opera, with the figures wearing elaborate costumes and acting out epic tales. The characters are all portrayed as either noble heroes or evil villains. Most impressive of all, they are all voiced by a single puppeteer.
“A Sea of Puppets” is a traditional Taiwanese glove puppet show performed on a beautifully carved wooden stage. With amazing skill the puppeteers bring the exquisite puppets with embroidered costumes to life. They perform not only delicate gestures, but also exciting fighting scenes and acrobatics. The story is a romantic tale where a young man saves a girl from the hands of a villain. In the show we will see all the characters of traditional Taiwanese puppetry: the young lady, the scholar, but also the clowns and the villains.
The show is without words and suitable for an audience of all ages. Please come and get caught up in the wonder and fantasy of Taiwanese puppetry.
Taiyuan Puppet Theatre Company will be invited to perform at the University of Massachusetts from February 27th to March 1st. That is a program under the Spotlight Taiwan Project, a collaboration between the Ministry of Culture of Taiwan and Five Colleges, Inc.
