  • Date:2022-05-23

Taiwanese theater troupe "Shakespeare's Wild Sisters Group (莎士比亞的妹妹們的劇團)" will present its latest modern play "Artificial Hells (神話學II:人造地獄)" at this year’s International Society for the Performing Arts' (ISPA) flagship program "Pitch New Works."

ISPA organizes two congresses yearly, one in New York which is held at the beginning of the year, and the other will be held in another city. Twice a year, ISPA holds a public call for applications from which ten submissions are selected to be presented at the following ISPA congress. In view of the current pandemic situation, the Hong Kong 2022 ISPA Congress will be conducted in virtual mode from May 24 through 27.

The troupe will introduce their new work to the curators of global performing arts organizations through an online presentation on May 25 and 26 (Eastern Time), along with nine other teams from Hong Kong, China, the UK, New Zealand, among others.

Commissioned by the National Theater and Concert Hall and directed by Baboo Liao (廖俊逞), "Artificial Hells" is a combination of virtual and in-person performances that explores the new normal of live performances after the COVID-19 pandemic. It is the second installation of the "Asian modern mythology trilogy (亞洲現代神話學)" following their 2019 production "Mythology Upon the Table (餐桌上的神話學)."

Shakespeare's Wild Sisters Group (SWSG) was founded in 1995 by Wei Ying-chuan (魏瑛娟). Limiting itself to no specific issues or conventional aesthetics, SWSG takes materials from all arts inspiring to create original theatrical works. Having been to Hong Kong, Macau, Beijing, Shanghai, Busan, Tokyo, Berlin, Singapore, Kobe, Paris, and New York, SWSG has been invited by various cities and countries to perform, and takes an important role in international city culture and artistic exchange for many years.
