Tsai Ming-liang’s Latest Feature, “Days,” Will Return to Film at Lincoln Center’s Theaters in August

"Days," the latest feature by Taiwan-based Malaysian director Tsai Ming-liang and an official selection of the 58th New York Film Festival, will return to Film at Lincoln Center (FLC)’s Francesca Beale Theater and Walter Reade Theater on August 13.

The film, which was selected for NYFF58’s Main Slate last year, had its North American premiere at a drive-in theater followed by virtual cinema screenings due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Now, since “it’s possible to hold in-theater screenings in New York City again,” FLC, the organizer of the NYFF, has decided to “bring back much of the NYFF58 lineup to be screened and seen as these films were meant to be,” and Days will be part of this special series of encore and in-person screenings of 33 titles from NYFF58, according to FLC’s official announcement.

Days recounts the everyday lives of a middle-class man and a poor boy who gives body massages. The film was highly praised last fall at the New York Film Festival, and the tickets were snapped up soon after they went on sale. As FLC noted, “Among the most cathartic entries in Tsai’s filmography, Days is a work of longing, constructed with the director’s customary brilliance at visual composition and shot through with profound empathy… Days will undoubtedly stand as one of Tsai’s best, sparest, and most intimate works.”

As the most celebrated figure of the second New Wave of Taiwanese cinema, Tsai is best known for his unreserved attitude toward thematic and cinematographic experimentation and is said to “chart the contours of contemporary alienation in mesmerizingly enigmatic works that are at once rigorously spare and richly sensuous.”
