In celebration of AAPI Heritage Month, the Queens Public Library’s Bayside, Flushing, and Forest Hills branches will showcase “Taiwan Book Corners” from May 1 to May 31 in collaboration with the Taipei Cultural Center in New York.

The “Taiwan Book Corner” exhibition showcases 13 captivating novels, picture books, and graphic novels from Taiwan. This diverse collection is available in both English and traditional Chinese, catering to readers from different backgrounds. Visitors can borrow their favorite books after exploring the exhibition and delve into Taiwan’s rich array of voices and narratives.

The titles presented in the “Taiwan Book Corners” encompass themes such as women, LGBTQ+, Taiwan’s history and culture, light literature and more. This award-winning collection vividly illustrates the vibrancy and inclusivity of Taiwan’s literary landscape.

To kick off the exhibition, a series of special book talks will be held at the Queens Public Library-Forest Hills on Thursday, May 9. Attendees are invited to join us for an engaging author talk with acclaimed Taiwanese writer Shih Shu-Ching (施叔青). A prominent cultural figure in Taiwan and Hong Kong, she has resided in New York for over two decades. Discover her renowned “Taiwan Trilogy (臺灣三部曲),” which offers a captivating journey through Taiwan’s history from the 1820s to 1947, providing cultural insights and a woman’s perspective through intricate storytelling.

Following the talk, there will be a discussion about “The Boy from Clearwater,” a graphic novel from Taiwan depicting the true story of Tsai Kun-lin (1930-2023). Delve into Tsai’s life and Taiwan’s modern history with translator Lin King as she shares insights into the moving narrative, stunning artwork, and her translation process.
