Taiwanese curators to join curatorial exchange program in Chicago

  • Date:2023-03-27

Independent curator Huang Yu-wen (黃又文) and Hsieh Yu-ting Hsieh (謝宇婷) from the Kaohsiung Museum of Fine Arts (KMFA) have been selected to participate in the four-day "EXPO CHICAGO-2023 Curatorial Exchange" program, the first collaboration between Taipei Cultural Center in New York and EXPO CHICAGO, from April 11 to 15 in Chicago.

Joshi Radin Flores from EXPO CHICAGO complimented that Huang is a potential curator who has worked with Nordic countries and curated exhibitions in Taiwan and Hong Kong; while Hsieh was a part of the curatorial team of KMFA's "South Plus (大南方多元史觀)" exhibition and is interested in communications with the Global South. Flores believes the two selected candidates have extensive experience and they are ready to foster future collaborations through the program.

Flores pointed out this is a special year for the Curatorial Exchange program, as they have thirteen countries represented with Argentina, Australia, Lithuania, Mexico, the United Kingdom and Taiwan participating for the first time. Huang and Yu will engage in an in-depth discussion with these international curators and share their vision, goals, and challenges with curators from various states of America, hoping to increase Taiwan's international visibility in the visual arts scene.

EXPO CHICAGO is one of Chicago's most important contemporary and modern art expositions. Since the launch of the Curatorial Exchange program in 2018, it has supported the participation of 120 curators and facilitated ten international collaborations. Every year, the organizer invites consulates, government agencies, and international arts and cultural organizations to participate in the event. This is the first year Taipei Cultural Center in New York joins EXPO CHICAGO, and other international partners include the British Consulate General in Chicago, the Consulate General of Denmark in New York, and the Australian Consulate-General in Chicago.
