Taiwan’s acclaimed Indigenous contemporary dance group, Bulareyaung Dance Company (BDC), will make its U.S. debut this summer with a North American tour from July 27 to August 16, 2025. The company will give eight performances at some of the region’s most respected festivals and venues, including the American Dance Festival (ADF), Festival des Arts de Saint-Sauveur (FASS), Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, “Taiwanese Waves” at SummerStage, Battery Dance Festival, and the IAIA Museum of Contemporary Native Arts.
Led by renowned Indigenous Taiwanese choreographer Bulareyaung Pagarlava of the Paiwan tribe, BDC blends contemporary dance with the traditions of Taiwan’s Indigenous cultures. Bulareyaung studied in New York in 1998 with a fellowship from the Asian Cultural Council and has choreographed for Cloud Gate Dance Theatre, Cloud Gate 2, and the Martha Graham Dance Company. In 2015, he returned to his hometown in Taiwan to found BDC.
Inspired by nature and traditional songs, BDC has performed internationally in countries including Canada, France, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, and Australia. As part of the 2025 tour, the company will present different programs at each stop, including the work Luna, as well as excerpts from Colors:
• Luna draws from the ancestral songs and rituals of the Bunun people in Taiwan’s mountains, infusing the dance with profound strength and beauty.
• Colors, inspired by Taiwan’s mountains, sea, and everyday life, transforms simple local imagery into vivid and expressive dance.
BDC will also collaborate with the award-winning Indigenous Taiwanese singer ABAO in a special performance at Taiwanese Waves at SummerStage on August 3 in New York’s Central Park.
In addition, a special screening of the company’s recent documentary, Dancing Home(跳進部落的孩子), will take place at the Museum of Chinese in America on August 6, followed by a conversation with the artists. The film highlights BDC’s artistic journey, and the post-screening discussion will further explore founder Bulareyaung’s cross-cultural experiences between Taiwan and the U.S.
