Metrograph will present “Drifting through Time: Focus on Lee Kang-sheng," the first major retrospective of Lee's work in New York from March 30 to May 1, 2025. Supported by the Taipei Cultural Center in New York, the retrospective looks back at Lee's 35-year career, including the films produced by his almost symbiotic collaboration with director Tsai Ming-Liang, his own directorial work. Lee will meet the audience on April 25.
Lee Kang-Sheng was scouted from the streets by Tsai Ming-Liang in the production of his TV film Boys (1991) and has collaborated and sat at the heart of every production the director has made since. The program includes Vive L'Amour (1994), The River (1997), The Hole (1998), What Time Is It There? (2001), The Wayward Cloud (2005), and I Don't Want to Sleep Alone (2006) to explore his longstanding collaboration with Tsai.
To highlight Lee Kang-sheng as an accomplished director, this program will showcase his directorial efforts. Lee's Help Me Eros (2007) was nominated for a Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival and won a special jury award at the 2007 World Film Festival of Bangkok. Single Belief (2017) won the Grande Branded Content Lotus in the Best Use of Non-Fiction Film at the 20th ADFEST. The rarely seen My Stinking Kid (2004) is a drama about a sickly boy bullied by his peers because the medication he takes makes him stink of ammonia, co-credited to Lee and Tsai.
