From January 24 to February 2, 2025, Taiwan’s Shinehouse Theatre will bring their internationally acclaimed production, The Whisper of the Waves, to New York City’s SoHo Playhouse as part of the theater’s prestigious International Fringe Encore Series.
Supported by the Taipei Cultural Center in New York, the highly anticipated performances mark the North American debut of Shinehouse Theatre and their thought-provoking work.
The Whisper of the Waves draws inspiration from both the devastating earthquakes and the COVID-19 pandemic that have profoundly impacted the world in recent years. Balancing social issues with poetic theatricality, the production intertwines text and movement in a fluid and stylized narrative. At its core lies a poignant question: When disaster strikes, what would you do, and who could you turn to?
The play portrays multiple characters and storylines: a lonely taxi driver forms an intimate connection with a sensitive potted plant; a same-sex couple faces the emotional complexities of surrogate parenting; a devoted woman accompanies her beloved cat on its final journey. Moreover, spirit mediums speak for these characters, voicing their innermost thoughts and emotions. This inventive approach creates a deeply moving exploration of human resilience, relationships, and our bond with nature.
Each year, SoHo Playhouse’s International Fringe Encore Series spotlights emerging artists who demonstrate exceptional artistic and commercial potential at Fringe Festivals worldwide. Shinehouse Theatre was selected for the 2025 series following their impressive performances at the Prague Fringe in 2024.
Directed by the company’s artistic director, Po-Yuan Chung, The Whisper of the Waves has previously captivated audiences in Taiwan, South Korea, the UK, Germany, Lithuania, Türkiye, Japan, and the Czech Republic. With this North American premiere, Shinehouse Theatre is set to introduce its distinctive voice from Taiwan to the vibrant heart of New York City’s theater scene.
