This year’s TIFF Cinematheque will present “Edward Yang's Taipei Stories” from July 4-30, 2024. Supported by the Taipei Cultural Center, the comprehensive retrospective of Yang’s work demonstrates his lasting influence on modern Taiwanese film. Four special guests, Ryan Krahn, Shelly Kraicer, Theresa Wang and Yuetong Liu, will be introducing the films.
Born in Shanghai and brought to Taiwan by his family in 1949 before later moving to the United States, Yang returned to Taipei in 1980 with a restored passion in cinema, and subsequently became one of the main progenitors of the Taiwanese New Wave. Most of Yang’s films explore the complexities of modern living: his “Taipei trilogy” — That Day, on the Beach (1983), Taipei Story (1985), and Terrorizers (1986), along with his “New Taipei Trilogy”—A Confucian Confusion (1994), Mahjong (1996), and Yi Yi (2000).
The retrospective includes three sections of Yang’s filmography: Yang’s “Taipei trilogy”; his novelistic works — Expectations (1982), A Brighter Summer Day (1991), Yi Yi (2000), and his social satires — A Confucian Confusion (1994), Mahjong (1996).
According to TIFF Cinematheque’s coordinator Vicky Wong, “His works can all be viewed as multi-layered, coded texts that demand to be read — and seen — more than once. Political and sardonic commentaries simmer below the surface of his fiction — but those surfaces are gleaming, meticulously designed and executed.”
Established in 1990 by the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), TIFF Cinematheque is devoted to sharing the art of film. TIFF’s year-round programming includes standout contemporary cinema, career retrospectives of film’s most influential directors and performers, spotlights on regions and film movements from around the world, and exclusive screenings of new and rare archival prints — all selected by TIFF’s team of programmers and notable guests.
