Ink, a mesmerizing performance by acclaimed Taiwanese choreographer and media artist Huang Yi, will have its US premiere at Lincoln Center on November 2-3, 2024. This visionary work combines contemporary dance with cutting-edge robotics and the flowing art of traditional ink painting, creating a performance that challenges and redefines the boundaries of modern art.

In Ink, Huang Yi explores the delicate interplay between technology and tradition, using both human dancers and a robotic arm to represent the intricate brushstrokes of ink on paper. The performance reflects the emotional depth of life’s experiences, inspired by the unpredictable and organic flow of ink. This symbolic movement captures the constant flux of human emotions, as ink and motion come together to form a dynamic narrative.

This performance is also deeply enriched by Huang Yi’s collaboration with Taiwan’s master calligrapher, Tong Yang-Tze, whose work has become synonymous with the powerful and expressive use of ink. Tong’s dynamic calligraphy has long influenced Huang Yi’s choreographic vision, inspiring the fluid, emotive movements within Ink. In this performance, the robotic arm serves as a symbolic brush, while the dancers’ movements echo the sweeping strokes of Tong’s ink work, embodying a seamless integration of artistic disciplines.

As we celebrate the US premiere of Ink, we also look forward to Tong Yang-Tze’s upcoming exhibition, The Great Hall Commission: Tong Yang-Tze, Dialogue, at The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Tong will create two monumental calligraphy works for the Museum’s historic space, with the exhibition opening on November 21, 2024, and running until April 8, 2025.

Both performances of Ink have almost sold out. Don’t miss the chance to experience this captivating fusion of dance, robotics, and calligraphy, where innovation meets tradition in a performance that celebrates the beauty of human expression.
